Back to School Backpack Checks: Setting Your Child Up for Comfort
As families across Brisbane prepare for the new school year, there’s one essential item that deserves more attention than it typically receives—the school backpack. Your child will wear this backpack for hours each day, five days a week, for an entire school year.
Why Backpack Selection Matters
Think about everything your child carries to school: textbooks, laptops or tablets, lunchboxes, water bottles, sports equipment, and various supplies. That’s quite a load for developing spines and growing bodies to manage.
A poorly designed bag or one that’s packed incorrectly can contribute to unnecessary strain on young shoulders, necks, and backs.
What to Look for in a School Backpack
- Two Wide, Padded Shoulder Straps: Look for straps that are at least 5cm wide with adequate padding. Single-strap bags cause uneven weight distribution and should be avoided for daily school use.
- Padded Back Panel: A cushioned back provides comfort and helps protect your child from sharp corners of books poking through the bag.
- Multiple Compartments: Bags with several pockets allow for better weight distribution. Heavier items should be packed closest to the child’s back.
- Appropriate Size: When worn correctly, the backpack shouldn’t extend below the lower back or hang more than 10cm below the waistline.
- Lightweight Material: The empty bag itself should be light, as its weight counts toward the total load.
- Waist and Chest Straps: These help distribute weight more evenly and keep the bag stable, particularly useful for children who walk or cycle to school.
Common Backpack Mistakes to Watch For
- Wearing Only One Strap: This creates uneven weight distribution and can affect posture.
- Packing Too Much: A loaded backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight.
- Wearing the Bag Too Low: Backpacks should sit snugly against the upper back, about 5cm above the waist.
- Uneven Packing: Distribute weight evenly and pack heavier items in the centre, close to the back.
Signs Your Child’s Backpack May Be Causing Strain
- Complaining about shoulder, neck, or back discomfort after school
- Red marks or indentations on shoulders from straps
- Numbness or tingling in arms or hands
- Changes in posture when wearing the bag
- Struggling to put on or take off the backpack
